Feeding a plant-based diet to children always sparks debate, especially for these high-profile parents who are raising famous vegan kids Photo © Brian Bowen Smith/MPX/PETA, composition by VFL When you think of the food from your childhood, what do you imagine? Chicken nuggets, sausage and chips, cheesy pasta, and custard-drenched puddings tend to be nostalgic staples for people from all walks of life. Today, children’s plates can vary greatly, from those that lean heavily on convenient ultra-processed foods and “safe” simple carbs, to “almond mum”-approved whole foods and everything in between. Yet, it seems few childhood diets face as much scrutiny as a plant-based one. And for celebrity parents raising their kids vegan, that scrutiny becomes particularly intense under the spotlight. Despite evidence that a well-planned plant-based diet can support good health at any stage of life, vegans routinely face interrogations over protein, iron, and B12, especially when children are involved. When raising kids in the public eye, walking the fine line between sharing your own lifestyle with your family, and “forcing” your children to be vegan can be precarious. That makes it all the more refreshing when vegan celebrities speak out about their families’ plant-based diets, even when they’re not 100 per cent committed. From lifelong activists to stars who overhauled their household diets overnight, here are the celebrity parents openly raising famous vegan kids. So it was only natural that her son, Bear Blu would be raised vegan right from when he was born in 2011. The quintessential “crunchy mom,” Silverstone has been vocal about her parenting techniques from the start, openly sharing her successes with “bird-feeding” Bear while weaning, extended co-sleeping, and following an attachment parenting style guided by nature. However, veganism is perhaps the single greatest contributor to her happy household according to Silverstone, who credits the lifestyle for Bear’s health, wellbeing, and great behaviour. “I’ve never had to raise my voice to Bear,” she told US Weekly in 2019. Although much of this harmony can be put down to parenting (through which Alicia places great importance on mutual respect), the actress also considers the family’s food choices to make a big difference. While he has plenty of energy, Silverstone credits Bear’s diet (which regularly includes brown rice, quinoa, and his favourite, kale) for his calm, centred personality. “When your kid feels good, they act well,” she added. And it’s not only Bear whose attitude benefits from a plant-based diet. Alicia also says that her own healthy eating habits help her to be a more patient, present parent. “If I don’t eat well, I don’t sleep well, and if I don’t sleep well, I’m a grumpy mama,” she said in a 2020 interview. Silverstone has shared more of her parenting wisdom in her book, The Kind Mama, which combines her own experience of a healthy, plant-based pregnancy and early motherhood with expert guidance from obstetricians, nutritionists, holistic health counsellors, and more. Vegetarian since early childhood, Watson went vegan in 2015 after vegan documentaries showed her the truth about the dairy and egg industries. Now, she and her husband James Dunmore, who’s also vegan, are passing their passion for plant-based eating on to their children. Their son, Willoughby, was born in March 2024, and the choice to wean him on purely plant-based foods was not a difficult one for Lucy and James. “We didn’t even really have to discuss it,” Watson shared with Mother & Baby. “We’ve been plant-based for so long, it just felt natural.” For Lucy, fostering a healthy relationship with food is important, and she applies the…
