New Documentary Explores Animal Intelligence and Challenges Exploitation

The documentary We Are Animals, featuring Moby, Mya, and Nikki Glaser, uses science to explore animal intelligence and challenge exploitation. The film aims to change how people see animals and their treatment.

A new documentary titled We Are Animals examines animal intelligence and questions the ethics of human exploitation. The film uses scientific evidence to show how animals experience life with thoughts and feelings similar to our own. Researchers in 2009 tested pig intelligence by placing a mirror in their pen. The pigs spent about five hours observing themselves. When shown a food bowl visible only through the mirror reflection, seven of eight pigs located it using the reflection alone. Other animals also display complex abilities. Orangutans create leaf umbrellas in Borneo’s rain. Cockatoos keep precise rhythm. Cows form close friendships. Sheep remember and recognize individual human faces. The documentary features Moby, Mya, and Nikki Glaser alongside activists, scientists, and philosopher Peter Singer. Nina Jackel, founder of Lady Freethinker, directed the film to challenge societal acceptance of animal exploitation in food, research, fashion and other areas. Jackel established Lady Freethinker in 2013 after leading investigations into the dog meat trade, elephant tourism and fur farming. She stated the film offers education and empowerment, not judgment, emphasizing that viewers can make a difference through their choices. We Are Animals will screen at the La Femme Film Festival in Los Angeles. A Q&A session with Nina Jackel follows the screening on Sunday, October 25. The film aims to inspire audiences to recognize animal sentience and act compassionately.
